Birmingham’s Subb-an emerged in the house scene more than 15 years ago, but his sound has matured and grown ever more artful in the years since. He shows that with four heady yet still dancefloor-bound jams that are endlessly transportive. Radiant stabs and funked-out luminescence evoke solar flares and cosmic sprawl on the opener, but ‘Sky High’ then pulls back to a more reserved but funky blend of neat stabs and kinetic drums. ‘Circular Motion’ is amped up and slithering tech with a light touch but sophisticated shimmer in the synths. It’s deep tackle that moves your ass, with closer ‘Atmosphere’ burrowing ever deeper without losing its melodic shine.
