On the heels of his globe-trotting album Noches Sephardies, Dutch drum & bass great Coco Bryce goes even further afield with this new three-tracker. The EP reimagines a Greek rebetiko classic about a doomed love to start with – it’s a wild but romantic ride through dusty vocal samples and slick drums, then he spins a lively klezmer party jam. ‘Klezmer Crew’ is full of melodic whimsy and crashing drums and despite the weirdness, is well executed. Closer ‘Labyrinth’ delves into 1980s German synth experimentation with plenty of different melodies ping-pong about the mix over a fairly tough barrage of breaks. Across these diverse reinterpretations, Bryce bridges folk, world and electronic sounds into an adventurous, boundary-crossing collection.
