Kalahari Oyster Cult’s Mineral series focuses on surfacing material from labels whose original runs were small enough to remain obscure. Grayhound Recordings was one such, being DJ Garth’s San Francisco imprint, first founded in 1998 and which grew out of the Wicked crew and their Full Moon beach parties. ‘Mercurial Drums’ appeared on ‘Nectar’s Orange’ EP, its dubby kettle smacks and snippy kicks-n’-claps doing authentic work, and at the time, press copy from Freer Sounds. Succulent’s ‘The Nature Of Things’ also came out in 2001, bringing uncertain space-age tech and the occasional soundbath-worthy resonances.
