UK sci-fi-futurist techno label Voyager was set up by Mal Hombre, the concept modelled on the NASA Voyager programme. Carmelo Ponente is Belgian, drawn into techno specifically through the Fuse club in Brussels, and works exclusively by modular system, like cockpit controls; it’s audible throughout, as ‘Unknown Transmission’, ‘Axial Symmetry’ and ‘The Divided Soul’ bring head-first collisions of layered, unpredictable synthesis. It’s a heavy cosmological brief, but it’s also done right, being a modern update on a retro soundboard – think HUD indicator bleeps, homing system risers, early Doctor Who-esque foley.
