Melbourne’s Fergus Sweetland has appeared on quality techno labels only so far, and this arrival on Key is a future case in point. His sound is all about economy – it’s not minimal, but nothing is out of place, and everything has a purpose. ‘Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda’ opens as an invitation into his world where sounds decay and change shape and a lean liner groove rolls on endlessly. ‘We’re All Just Marionettes Bro’ is more urgent and clenched in its tension with the kicks hitting just right, while ‘Could Be Time’ is a dubby sound with a hard edge and warped synths skewing through the mix. ‘Wonky Wobblong’ is a fourth example of his swamp but propulsive sound, where abstraction becomes art.
