Some artists have such a big impact that everything they put out could be reasonably called definitive. Der Zyklus – like all of the projects Detroit’s Gerald Donald is involved with, from Dopplereffekt to Drexciya – is one such artist. Here he is back on the Clone Aqualung Series with essential Motor City-rooted electro and techno fusion that have been out of print for far too long. ‘Mxyzptik’ opens with plunging bass and trademark slithering synths while vocoder vocals open a portal to another dimension. ‘Der Tonimpulstest’ is an acidic sound with chrome-plated drum patterns that never stop popping and ‘Formenverwandler’ pulls back into a more slinky and deep late night and introspective gem. ‘Die Dammerung Von Nanotech’ closes with more forward motion and manic synths tattooing the drums.
