Gigi FM supplies the sixth and final entry in Essen’s Curation Series, charging towards «charged, body-focused techno with a wider sense of space and emotion». The music here is full of an energy martial arts experts would call zanshin: a poised, elegant state of alertness. Fergus Sweetland’s opening feature sounds like a plane full of witches coming into land, with jet engine/runway sound effects prefiguring a sharp outtake of breath followed by a drastic beat drop. The selections from there are quite dreamy and clear-eyed, Efdemin’s ‘Anukari’ on the B a characteristically ambient percussor, and Fireground’s ‘Even’ is as good, with its seething firestorm ambience set to ritual drums.
