The mysterious DIX3 steps out of the shadows with this new EP, although not all that far out, frankly, cause his sound is a soot-black techno world of anxiety and paranoia with very little melody. Instead, ‘Freq Mode’ bids with swinging drums and hits and rattling synth lines that absorb light rather than reflect it. ‘Splinters’ is a symphony of liquid grooves and warped, mind-melting pads that are scruffy and greyed-out, then two remixes offer a different feel: Dynamic Forces remixes with a hurried and urgent rhythm that almost falls over itself, it’s that keen to move, while Invexis allows an oversized lead to rumble away drunkenly. Characterful techno with a dark heart.
