COW’s new EP is built around dancers and movement before any one fixed sound. The Perth producer keeps the atmosphere tense and unpredictable across all of the cuts with techno as the base but plenty of room for stranger textures and ideas to creep in. There’s a sense of experimentation here without it becoming overly abstract; the tracks still have somewhere to go. ‘Dead Air’ especially leaves things feeling unsettled, while ‘Velvet’ has a more liquid flow to it – like hot lava smothering everything in its wake as sharper percussion cuts through. Curious, slightly odd and never too comfortable.
