Venerated techno veteran Speedy J and Berlin’s dark lord Rodhad unite as The Department of Almost for Second Office, a debut LP developed over ten concentrated days in Berlin’s WSNWG studio. The 11 tracks find the pair fold propulsive dancefloor material into spacious, contemplative passages, favouring gradual transformation over dramatic gesture. A subtle sense of distance runs throughout, evoking cold light and glacial topographies as rhythm and atmosphere slowly merge. Rather than a one-off collaboration, the album is said to follow years of creative exchange between two long-established artistic voices. It’s the sort of accomplished record that finds real common ground without diluting either artist’s identity.
