Tokyo tune tachyon Satoshi Tomiie is having a moment. At the same time as his recent Phonogramme dub techno outing ’12B Dub Part 3′, he now recalls his link-up with modular specialist Nao Gunji and French label A_A, first released in 2020 and now out digitally. Ubiquity was a deliberate reset for Tomiie, abandoning computers for an all-hardware studio, every track performed and recorded live in a single pass. Electric jazz, avant-garde composition and the skeletal mechanics of house music are all drawn from the utility belt, pursuing what the pair dub «Abstract_Architecture», grooves downed to essentials and reconstituted unpredictably. Such process-driven, feedforward approaches are now all the rage; ‘Rose’, ‘Mikro Kosmos’ and ‘108 Swing’ stand out as among the best inspirators as such. File next to DJ Plant Texture or Huerco S.
