A World No More – Yuku 48
Obeka produce once bombas originales para la referencia número 48 del sello de República Checa.
Bermudian artist Obeka – real name Jahday Ford, whose recent move from Bermuda to Stockport informed a transition from percussionist (and glass artist) to ferocious electronic musician – delivers a striking debut with A World No More on Prague’s YUKU. Prsonal political ardour seeps like fertiliser into the salted soils of bass music, as the artist draws on Afro-Caribbean rhythm, dub pressure and industrial club arenas for an impressive debut. ‘Ogun’ – named after the Yoruba deity of war and justice – meets ‘Drillaman’ and ‘Pon Ya Head’; all warmer-uppers colliding furious dancehall dembow and deep bass callosity, marking only the beginning of a well-compacted, wall-breaking statement in long-playing sound. ‘Kuduro!’ and ‘Pressure’ push into genre-checking territory amid a change of tempo, though all from batida and gqom appear in fleet; and rare moments like ‘Ubuntu’ and the closing title track occasionally soften the tone.
