When reality-within-reality Cronenberg films inform the work of geniuses, you know something’s about to explode. Dave Sumner aka Function’s Existenz cycle began in 2019, drawing on American cable television aesthetics, occult themes, and his earlier Sandwell District project’s techno-industrial legacy. ‘Aeternum (Existenz)’ is his closing bracket on that body of work, making up six tracks made in the same period for Tresor, streaming the deep techno channellings of ‘Subject f (Transcendence)’, ‘Awakening From The Illusory Self’, and the ‘Green’ EP. Its framework is the seven stages of alchemy: ‘Rubedo’, the final digital-only track, is the reddening. The LP comes dedicated to John Mendez of both Silent Servant and Sandwell District, who died in 2024.
