Helsinki’s Samuel Van Dijk returns to his regular home label Delsin under his VC-118A alias with a masterclass in cinematic machine funk. Skittering drum patterns, subtle distortion and rich textures of the sort he is by now well known for all push electro beyond the realms of the club and into somewhere that emotional and expressive potential can be fully explored. There’s a brooding melancholy lurking beneath the crisp rhythms here, all of which unfurl patiently. Van Dijk’s obsessive attention to detail and dynamic range creates a sound that’s both cerebral and visceral and always sophisticated yet immediate. A tastefully moody trip once more.
