Breakthrough ushers in a new chapter for the Primal Instinct label who, after nine releases centred on the stickman tribe, begins a visual shift with each new cover sourced from Wikipedia’s open archive and subtly reworked. Swiss-born, Portugal-based Chlar is behind the music, which is muscular, glitchy techno rooted in underground caverns and dank warehouse spaces. ‘Close Contract’ is a weighty dub opener with echo to spare, ‘Pressure Point’ is harder and darker and ‘Anaerobic’ is minimal but funky with insistent claps and a rising sense of pressure. Two more jams close out what is a punchy EP of warm, supple rhythms.
