Evidently from the name Cryptophony, Spanish producer Reeko works as d&b producer by day and as a signals intelligence agent by night. Varying his sound between deep electronica and d&b-tempo drive, his latest ciphertext for Samurai Music is a tough productive nut to crack, awing us with its exploitive spectrality and burrs across primal space. Across seven extended tracks, Rico makes a point of using inaudible or encrypted sound as a compositional springboard, though whether any actual secret or backmasked signals exist on the record remains to be decoded. ‘El Cielo Liquido’ glides on vaporous tension and fluid 303 lines, ‘Retumbra’ moves through staggered kicks and arpeggios, while ‘Frequencias Parricidas’ rides a low, chugging 4/4 pulse. The ‘Secuencia Criptofonica’ flies through a cloud of inharmony, reaching a head of pure, enigmatic, beatless texture design.
