Dub is a metaphorically and literally bottomless world in which to lose yourself, with distinctive flavours from different eras appealing to different moods and minds. SND & RTN serve up a fresh, contemporary masterclass here that is never too slavish to anything that has gone before while also folding in myriad subtle references to everything from Tubby to Maurizio. Opener ‘Feedback in Dub’ marries rolling sub rhythms with melancholic horns, while ‘Istari’ nods to minimal Berlin dub techno with its own textured path. On the flip, ‘The Orb’ showcases great control of space while letting subtle synth stabs and echo-laden percussion breathe, and ‘Hear a Man’ drifts through hypnotic loops and cascading melodies for an expansive, otherworldly atmosphere. Analogue-driven dub innovation.
