Brazil-born but now based in Portugal, where the techno scene is thriving, Marcal has become one of its sharper new voices. His sound is precise, detail-driven, always alert with tension. Four Small Escapes gathers tracks built on those aesthetics and ‘Smoke from Respawn’ opens things with syncopated rhythms and wooden, glassy percussion that feels spacious yet propulsive. ‘Arapuca’ turns darker – its rolling low end and sharp accents staying alive throughout and ‘Ultimamente’ is the record’s most immersive stretch with a vocal woven in with care. Closer ‘The Surprise Test’ is rawer and more direct with syncopated claps driving it home.
