Echocord has long been a home of quality dub techno and Heirloom Signal feels like a perfect match for both artist and label. Mike Schommer is an early Deepchord affiliate who resurfaced in 2015 after years of silence. He has built a reputation for patient, carefully sculpted releases.
This EP continues that tradition with three original tracks and three thoughtful remixes, striking a balance between atmosphere and rhythm but rooted in tradition. ‘Violet’s Dream’ opens with a slow, brooding pulse. More dub than techno, its crisp layers evoking the sensation of drifting on open water. ‘Mariner’s Dub’ is more stripped back, with stark minimalism and cavernous echoes. ‘Moon Serpent’ lifts the energy, adding brisk percussion and airy synths for the most techno-focused cut of the set.
On the remix side, Another Channel reshapes ‘Violet’s Dream’ into a deep and timeless version while Mathimidori brings subtle propulsion to ‘Mariner’s Dub’ by nudging it toward the dancefloor while retaining its meditative core. TM Shuffle closes with a spirited Basement Dub of ‘Moon Serpent’, layering movement and drive without sacrificing atmosphere. Heirloom Signal is restrained and true to the roots of dub techno while still forward-looking.
