Netherlands-based Mike McDowell aka Hellboii’s final album under the name is a full-on descent into the machinery that has long been shaping techno. Across 17 tracks for the legendary Bunker label, he pulls together acidic techno, EBM, industrial electronics and darker ambient passages with a sci-fi influence hanging over everything. The longer cuts give the record- and your mind – room to properly mutate, while shorter pieces hit hard and disappear before you’ve fully got to grips with them. There’s a grim, futuristic quality running through it all, but also something strangely human underneath the noise. It’s an unsettling listen with a bleak view of the future but one that is intriguing from start to finish.
