We love a good archaeological dig into German DIY history, and this sure is one of those. Recorded in the winter of 1981/82 between rehearsal spaces, provincial discos and a humble four-track setup, this self-titled 7″ from Deutsche Schaferhunde was originally pressed in a tiny run of 500 copies and has since become a spenny collector’s grail. The minimalist, uncompromising songs move between raw electronics, percussive noise and sharp social commentary informed by Cold War tension and young rebellion. ‘Rosa Brille’ remains startlingly urgent, ‘Gasmasken’ imagines gas masks dancing in the woods to sirens and the Holger Czukay/Jah Wobble-inspired ‘Mein Herz’ adds warmth to the unease. A vital musical time capsule.
