Brazilian producer Marcal has risen from underground favourite to one of contemporary techno’s most dependable operators, with releases for the likes of Token, Soma and KEY demonstrating a knack for balancing raw power with meticulous sound design. His debut outing for the Berlin imprint arrives as a four-track vinyl-only affair that wastes little time making its intentions known. ‘Boss Fight’ opens with a dense, piston-driven groove, its thudding low end wrapped in shifting textures that steadily tighten their grip. ‘Delayed Choice’ takes a more rhythmic approach, using intricate percussion to build momentum without sacrificing punch. Flip it over and ‘Desire’ introduces a more sinister atmosphere, pairing taut drums with squelching electronic fragments that dart through the mix like loose currents. ‘Known Unknown’ closes proceedings through a curious tangle of effects and rhythmic sleight of hand, ending a release that once again underlines Marcal’s command of modern techno’s darker reaches.
