Thessaloniki, Greece-born ANNE’s first EP is an assured debut with four tracks of dancefloor-oriented techno that never foregoes emotional depth while tapping into real physical force, which is a combination that’s harder to pull off than it sounds. Opener ‘Daydream’ sets a melancholic, driving tone immediately and drifts deep before ‘Castles in the Air’ lifts the energy with Detroit-inflected synth soul and propulsive percussion. The B-side keeps pushing without repeating itself as ‘Metallic Tapes’ locks into a hypnotic, trippy groove, while closer ‘In the Blink of an Eye’ makes the most persuasive case of all: that techno at its best can be simultaneously intense and genuinely beautiful.
