Perfect High EP – Altered Circuits 28

Curses makes dark, romantic electronic music that brushes up against EBM, new beat and synth-pop without settling into any of them. It is often a case of cooking up feelings first, and the genres come second. ‘Perfect High’ is his most dancefloor-facing record yet. The title track runs on detuned, chorus-thick leads; ‘Weapon Of Time’ ticks along on clockwork percussion; ‘Dare To Dream’ brings ominous choirs and ‘Killer Instinct’ has a squelching, rolling low end. Gated R-50 rhythms hold it all together, and his own voice weaves through a pile of off-kilter samples. Closer ‘Blasted’ pulls in NYC’s Andi for a slick, sensuous synth finish.
