They are the seven sacred relics of ancient Rome whose possession, according to Ovid, guaranteed divine protection and political authority. Each chapter corresponds to a catalogue number in multiples of seven, culminating at LYKOS-XLIX. Chapter One is dedicated to Lo Scettro di Priamo, the sceptre of Troy’s king, brought to Latium as a pledge of alliance.
