You don’t always hear a Vietnamese flute combined with an oscillator and cut and paste bits of vinyl recordings. Nor is it common to find yourself party to a five-day sound art residency at the Volta Echo Chamber, Brussels. Nevertheless, Razen’s stint at the world-famous venue saw Brecht Ameel and Kim Delcour team up with turntablist Guilhem All for what must have been a mind-blowing experience for everyone involved. Mirages on record is incredible, too. Aligning avant-garde electronica and turntablism with desert folk and what may or may not have been the sound of humans making music in its earliest forms, it feels like stepping into ancient history without leaving the present. A hallucinatory trip out of the space-time continuum we’re taught governs us, into a space and place which has and always will be there. Spiritual, a little spooky, and more than cosmic.
