London producer Theory digs into ragga jungle’s rawer corners on this latest 12″, coming via the Smooth Operator camp. ‘Reverse Gunshot’ on the A face pairs a tightly-coiled break with toasting from The Meditator, a name familiar to heads tuned into pirate-era steppers and sound system nights. On the flip, two versions of ‘Ruffian’ – a rare mix and its dub counterpart – nod to rare groove’s influence on early jungle, threading woozy samples through militant drum edits. Though he’s spent years refining this strain of hardcore continuum, Theory keeps things gritty here, with just the right amount of space left in the mix.
