One solution to the Fermi Paradox is the human zoo hypothesis: aliens simply haven’t invaded because they see it fitter to leave humanity to develop on its own. Berlin producer Chontane’s new ‘Vivarium’ EP is suitably named, then, comparing us to mere animals in digital cages. The short player has a darker feel than earlier works on labels like Arts and Mutual Rytm, tracing high-psi, underwater techno pressure through the slurried pulse of ‘In The Water’ and the oxygen-thin swirl of ‘Eyiya’. ‘Unrest’ churns with mechanical insistence, while ‘Take A Breath’ folds melodic vapour into a steady, body-tempered groove.
